Sugar-free cooking lessons

Paul Bain is a self-confessed chocoholic and sugar-rush fiend.

The 44-year-old financial adviser admits that in his teens and twenties he consumed upwards of 4,000 calories a day, mostly via pies, chips and sweet treats.

Now, thankfully, he is more restrained in his eating habits.

But rather than avoid chocolate, he has devised a plan that allows him to carry on enjoying his favourite food.

“I try not to eat it Monday to Thursday, but Friday is my treat night. I buy chocolate for me and the kids and a bottle of wine for my wife. There’s loads of chocolate for me and a tiny bit for the children,” he adds with a cheeky smile.

“Seriously, though, I can sit and eat a whole bar by myself. My dad is the same.”

Paul recognises he needs to be more discerning in what he eats, however.
Which is why he’s currently chopping vegetables under the watchful eye of Newcastle College hospitality lecturer Eddie Saint.

After successfully completing a Sport Studies with Business and Finance course at Manchester Metropolitan University I gained an athletic scholarship at Long Beach, California, whilst being coached by the Olympic coach Stan Long. In Long Beach I started personal training and gained a huge amount of experience within the fitness industry. Due to a back injury I was unable to compete at the highest level of athletics and I returned home to the North East. However, the injury did not stop me playing rugby and played for Westoe 1st team for 10 years and Durham County. Previously I had captained Northumberland schools, achieved England Schoolboy trials. I also achieved honours in athletics, tennis, football and rugby, gaining coaching qualifications in each. Most significantly I qualified in Advanced Personal Fitness training through Premier Fitness and have qualifications in Sports Psychology and Life Coaching. I am confident that, with the combined abilities and experience of the team and myself, we can provide the expertise and motivation to help you achieve and sustain a more healthy and fulfilled lifestyle.
