North East tops fat busting surgery chart

Shameful figures show the rate of people having anti-obesity surgery in the North East is four times English average.

The North East is the country’s capital for gastric bypasses and stomach stapling, shaming figures have revealed. In some parts of the region people are five times more likely to be admitted to hospital for obesity and given one of the operations than in England as a whole.

Tyneside-based personal trainer David Fairlamb said: “People don’t realise the long term effects of surgery, they just see it as an easy way out, and too many people get to a point where they just think I will continue to eat until I need surgery.”
